When visiting Ireland one can be sure of a welcome the warmth of which is rarely equaled anywhere in the world. The friendliness of the Irish people is quite rightly one of the country’s most well known traits along with a rich historical tradition, beautiful scenery, music and fascinating folklore.
Ireland’s often turbulent past was well known for immigration by a large percentage of the population, mainly to the new worlds of America, Canada and Australia. These movements were caused by famine, war, and both political and religious upheavals. Thankfully nowadays Ireland is a peaceful country with a good economy which attracts foreign nationals there to live and work.
It is estimated there are around 3,000 Thai nationals living in the Republic of Ireland. Most of this number is the wives of Irish nationals who have decided to leave their homeland and start a new life with their respective spouses in Ireland.
The remainder are either studying in various educational institutions and a small number working in IT industries. Most others have found employment in the service industry for example working in Thai restaurants, hotels and shops.
As Thai’s come from a country with strong social, family, and religious backgrounds, interaction with fellow Thais is of importance to maintain cultural connections including culture, traditions and language.
As you would expect one of the best places to meet Thais is in one of the many Thai restaurants which can be found throughout the country. There are now around ten Thai restaurants located in the capital city of Dublin alone. This is a great opportunity to not only meet up with fellow countrymen and women, but also enjoy delicious Thai cuisine at the same time.
Another great way to get in touch with other Thais in Ireland is by the internet. This is cheap and easy and you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home. There is a growing face book page called “Thai in Ireland” where you can chat and find out information about any activities that are going on giving you a chance to meet up with other Thais.
Thai – Ireland.com is another popular website for Thai people to get in touch with each other and also gives lots of interesting facts on Irish culture as well as up to date information on passport, visas, and marriage etc.
Recently the Thai community in Ireland has been fundraising with the objective of eventually building a temple complete with monks for Buddhist worship, education and to continue practicing Thai culture and traditions.
